Type Locality and Naming

Muglad Basin -- SW Sudan and the northwestern part of South Sudan.

Synonym: Sharaf Fm and the overlying Abu Gebra Fm are often combined into a single Abu Gebra Fm (Lenhard et al., 2025)

Lithology and Thickness

The Sharaf Formation is one of the early first cycle graben-fill clastics derived from basement complex, and it is made up of claystones, siltstones, and fine-grained sandstones that grade into coarse alluvial clastics toward the basin edges (Ramses, 1997).

Lower contact

Pre-Cambrian Basement Complex, non-conformably

Upper contact

Abu Gabra Fm rests conformably on the Sharaf Fm. Sandstone increases in frequency upwards from Sharaf Fm through the Abu Gebra Fm.

Depositional setting

Fluvial floodplain – lacustrine (Ramses, 1997). "In the first rift cycle (Barremian-Aptian), the Sharaf Fm and Abu Gabra Fm consist mainly of lacustrine shales and clays with thin intervals of sandstone. … The shales are interpreted to have formed in stratified lakes as distal dysoxic to anoxic facies." (Lenhardt et al., 2025)
